I am a therapist specializing in trauma treatment in Indiana and Ohio. I utilize Eye movement desensitization and reprocessing therapy. I want to highlight why I selected EMDR as my specific modality to target PTSD because I think it is essential to be transparent about the evidence behind chosen interventions.
The primary reason is that, as a mental health counselor, it is not only a professional imperative (I want my clients to get better quickly) but also an ethical one. We are trained to uphold that we only utilize evidence-based interventions to give our clients the highest probability of getting relief. EMDR has the empirical data to support its use.
Let’s look at a 2021 publication in the European Journal of Psychotraumatology that took 100 participants who met the criteria for PTSD that was sustained after a single-event trauma. The individuals in the study received just six sessions of EMDR, and the results were outstanding! The waitlisted group showed no improvements while the EMDR group, after just six sessions, experienced a 92% remission rate sustained during the 12-month follow-up, and the dropout rate was a staggeringly low 4.9%, indicating that EMDR is well tolerated and highly efficacious.
It is not uncommon by the time that someone shows up in my office that they have been struggling with PTSD symptoms for YEARS. Imagine if they knew that, with just six sessions, there could be up to a 92% chance that they would no longer meet the criteria for PTSD. Now, to be clear, this study was done on young people from 8 to 18, and it was single-event trauma, which does tend to be rare. However, I have witnessed rapid relief in people utilizing EMDR, and the ever-growing body of research that we have indicates that, with excellent treatment from a trauma specialist, remission is more likely than not.
That is why my practice focuses on short-term, structured trauma therapy with treatment plans designed to get you rapid relief.
